Lagos built a scene around the radical idea of a dance floor
For years a night out in Lagos meant a table, a bottle and a minimum spend. A generation priced out of that has spent three years building the alternative, and the alternative is simply a room you can dance in.
Ask DJ Aniko, who founded Group Therapy, what the difference is between a Lagos rave and a Lagos party and you get an answer with no theory in it at all.
At raves, the dance floor is present. You go to a usual Lagos party, and there is no dance floor.
That is the entire thesis, and everything else follows from it. Table culture, the bottle-service economy that has dominated Lagos nightlife, does not need a dance floor; it needs a place to put the bottle. Since roughly 2022 a set of ticketed, DJ-led collectives has grown in explicit opposition to that: Group Therapy, Ilé Ijó, Monochroma, Sunday Service, Bvrn Out, Element House, Flat 8, Dance Eko, Mainland House, Rooftop House.
The economics are the point
A Group Therapy ticket runs 21,000 naira, about $15, with no drinks minimum. That number is the argument. A table night is priced to exclude; a ticket night is priced to fill a floor. As Oluwamayowa Idowu of Culture Custodian put it to the Associated Press: "Raves are more democratic."
Aniko is also clear about what the independence is protecting:
Once you are reliant on the mainstream industry for the music, the mainstream creeps into the space.
It is not a secret any more
Boiler Room ran a Lagos session with Group Therapy in April 2025, with AMÉMÉ, Aniko, and Yosa back to back with WeAreAllChemicals. That is usually the moment a scene starts arguing with itself about selling out, and the healthy version of that argument is already happening.
